Die Geister, die wir riefen… ist ein kollaboratives Projekt von Studierenden der Kunsthochschule Mainz und versteht sich als künstlerisch- experimentelle Auseinandersetzung mit Sigmar Polkes Werkkomplex Athanor – insbesondere mit seiner hierzu im Vorfeld entstandenen fotografischen Arbeit und der daraus hervorgegangenen Publikation. Im Zentrum steht ein bewusstes Nachdenken und Träumen über Räume: ihre Geschichte, ihre Eigenheiten, ihre mögliche Zukunft. Wie können wir uns künstlerisch mit Räumen verbinden und diese erfahrbar machen?

(…) Zu Anfang allerdings ist da nicht viel: so gut wie nichts, nichts Greifbares, praktisch nur Unstoffliches: Ausdehnung, Außenwelt, das, was außerhalb von uns ist, das, in dessen Mitte wir uns bewegen, die Umwelt, der Raum ringsum.

The Spirits We Summoned… is a collaborative project by students at the Mainz Academy of Fine Arts and is conceived as an artistic and experimental exploration of Sigmar Polke’s Athanor installation – in particular his photographic work created in the run-up to the project and the resulting publication. At its heart lies a conscious reflection and dreaming about spaces: their history, their peculiarities, their possible future. How can we connect with spaces artistically and make them tangible?

(…) To start with, there wasn’t very much: nothingness, the impalpable, the virtually immaterial; extension, the external, what is external to us, what we move about in the midst of, our ambient milieu, the space around us.
